What is the process for renewal of a cosmetology license?

After school, cosmetologists require to take licensing exams, which involve both written and practical exams. This is according to the guidelines given by the state. After completing the licensing exams and acquiring a license, it is not the end of the road. Cosmetologists then need to regularly renew their licenses. The process only takes few minutes when done online but requires one to complete all the required licensing courses. The following are steps to take while renewing the license.

Step 1

You will need to fulfill the education requirements. Different states require different courses to be done before awarding the cosmetology license. You should therefore check in with the cosmetology board in your state to confirm what courses you need to take.

Step 2

If you do not already have one, you need to open an online account at your specific cosmetology board’s website. You will be asked to fill all the relevant information including your email, name, address, and phone number. You will have to choose a unique user name and password. In case you already have an account, you need to update your information e.g. change in you address.

Step 3

In Some states, the websites could also be hosting renewal of other professional licenses. If this is the case, then you need to choose cosmetology license from among the rest. If different categories exist, then you also need to pick the specific cosmetology license depending on your specific need.

Step 4

You will be prompted to enter the license number of the cosmetology license that you are currently using and the last 4 digits of your social security number. You will then proceed to pay the required licensing fees. This will be done by providing your debit or credit card number. For the purposes of tax, you will then print and save the renewal receipt.

Step 5

You should then wait for a considerable amount of time for your request to be received. Time may vary depending on the different states.

Step 6

You now need to renew the application in writing. This is done by printing the online application from the board’s website and filling in the required details. You should then take the form to yours state’s licensing authority along with a check or money order. The last step is to wait for the process to be completed. This may take up to eight weeks.
