To be eligible to get a license or practitioner certification, you must complete an approved training program at an accredited school. Training programs must meet the hour requirements set by the Montana State Board of Cosmetology. Below are the requirements for the various beauty professions.

  • Esthetician – 650
  • Barber – 1,500
  • Nail Technician – 350
  • Electrologist – 600

Once you complete the training, you must pass both a written and practical exam, and then you can apply for licensure with the board. Cosmetologists must complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years to maintain their licenses. The Associated Skin Care Professionals and the National Center for Education Statistics state that there are at least five approved cosmetology schools in Montana.
