The Ohio Board of Cosmetology requires that anyone who wishes to work in the field of cosmetology have a license. Before they can be eligible for a license or certification, they must complete a training program at an accredited school. The training typically includes a specific number of state-required hours that include classroom and on-the-job training. The number of hours varies by area of specialty. For instance, training programs for cosmetologists must be 1,500 hours while training for managing cosmetologists must be 1,800 hours. Training cannot come in the way of apprenticeships with the exception of those pursing instructor licenses. Once the student completes the training, he or she must pass a board licensing exam to obtain licensure with the state. To maintain licensure, the individual must complete eight hours of continuing education every two years.
